Literacy and communication skills lay the groundwork for success in school and future employment now more than ever before, and studies continue to report that many boys continue to struggle with reading.
Booth explains that when boys see Dad (or other male role models ) read, it helps to undo the misconception that reading is feminine and to gain a ‘reading identity’.
Male reading mentors can also expand a young boy’s understanding of what reading is, and demonstrate a unique style of reading, giving him a new way to look at himself as a reader.
What do the big guys read?

How, when and why do the big guys read?
What do the guys read about? Where can I find guys books? In the hands of other guys, of course! And on this awesome website: |
Boys need to see Dad and other male role models read because they need to know that reading is so much more than what they think of their usually female teachers, mom or sister do sitting quietly, still and often alone. It can be exciting, rambunctious, social and fun – or anything in between.
What is your experience with boys and reading? Please leave a comment about what motivates you, and how you motivate the younger guys in your life!

You make some really great points here. I have always said it is SO important for kids to see their parents reading, praying, etc.

Kids mimic what they see, so it is great to see them read

I totally agree. As the mother of two boys (and an English literature major) I think it’s so important that fathers are not just playing ball and horsing around with their sons. I want my children to see the intellectual side of their father, too, and learn that reading is valuable for everyone.

I agree with you, Darcy. The fact that the kids who love that horsing around side of Dad can also see that fun guys also enjoy reading, make it a part of their lives, etc. makes it an activity that they can relate to as normal, fun and something they see themselves doing.
