It’s Spring!
It’s Spring by Linda Glaser is an ideal picture book for young children. The simple vocabulary and vibrant pictures introduce the exciting changes that come with Spring. They initiate a range of conversations from the impact of weather on clothing choices to what is happening in the natural world around us. An excellent choice for introducing and celebrating Spring!
The Story of Little Quack
The Story of Little Quack by Betty Gibson is a relatable story of a lonely child set on a farm. Jackie’s only companion is a pet duck, Little Quack. Jackie and Little Quack enjoy many happy moments together before Little Quack mysteriously disappears. This story is great for prediction.
What happened to Little Quack? Will the friends ever meet again? What do we know about Spring time that might explain why Little Quack went off alone? What might Jackie find?
(Spoiler – Little Quack went off and had ‘quacklings’!) My kindergarten students love the satisfying ending of this story and it is a great example of new life in the Spring.
The New Baby Calf
I include The New Baby Calf here because it is such a great testament to the ‘new life’ aspect of Spring, and a nice link to Mother’s Day. The story begins with a mother cow taking care of her new baby calf. The story follows the new baby calf as he learns to stand, walk and experience life on the farm. A heartwarming story of growth (Edith Newlin Chase’s poem) with Barbara Reid’s vibrant plasticine artwork!
When Spring Comes
When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes is a descriptive story that is ideal for opening up discussion of nature’s signs of Spring. This book gives young children small details to watch for on nature walks throughout the earliest signs of Spring until summer. Whimsical artwork and repetitive text made this book just right for preschool, kindergarten and first grade students.
Stuck by Oliver Jeffers
Stuck is the story of Floyd, a young boy whose kite gets caught in a tree. He does what any problem-solving child would do – he tries to pull it out by its string, and when he is unsuccessful, throws his shoe at it. When that doesn’t work, he tries his other shoe. When that does not work, Floyd becomes even more determined, creative (and apparently strong) in his quest to free his kite.
To the readers’ delight, Floyd’s choices of what to throw into that tree become bigger, sillier and more unbelievable with each turn of the page! I will leave it at that…no spoilers here! This is a great book for keeping students engaged and anticipating what Floyd will try next, and a highly motivating subject for reflection:
What would you throw up the tree? Draw a picture and write: I would throw… (because)…
I hope you celebrate Spring by enjoying some of my favorite stories as much as I have with my own children and students over the years!
Enjoy the fresh start!
